Not sure this is a bug or intended behavior. One can use the 'Jacobs Mining Pick(sp)'(that has charges) in your righthand and mine with a shovel in your backpack. Go mining using the shovel the charges on the Jacobs Mining Pick do not get used.

If you repeat this same procedure with the 'Ancient Tinkers Hammer(sp)'(+10-50 Tinkering Skill and has charges) in your righthand and have tinkers tools in your backpack. Use the tinkering tools to make something, then keep hitting Make Last, your Ancient Tinkers Hammer will disappear.

I assume this will happen with the 'Ancient Blacksmiths Hammer(sp)' and this behavior is intended.

   Yes, this behavior is intended.

The simple reason is because of how sporadic mining can be.

In OSI days, mining was a static operation, where ore would respawn in the same location, over and over again.

Here on UOE, ore respawns at random; which makes mining in the same location-- for the same special ore-- twice rather unlikely to be a success.

In the end gathering any specific (colored) ore type, beyond regular, is on a balanced scale of 'unsure'. This fact is good for the economy, since everyone mining throughout the day has the same chances of finding what they truly want/need as everyone else.

In order for there to be a balance, with the hammers you mentioned, supply and demand must be factored in. Of course, when the charges, on the ancient hammers, are used up-- due to successfully crafting something of value, or the opposite-- the supply has been used up and a demand for more hammers/charges is factored in. In order for you, the craftsman, to get more (ancient hammers) you'll either have to find more-- through playing/hunting, or buy them from other players. This, in effect, is economics 101, and without it... anything crafted on the shard would have little value.

I hope this helps. Sorry if it is more then was required. Also, I probably skipped a few steps when it comes to Economics 101, but I slept through most of that class.  ::)

Thank you for the response. Though it seems to be a bit misleading to have an item with "charges" that do not get used up when doing said activity. I would think the charges need to be removed from the 'Jacobs Mining Pick' then, so players learn from the examples they are given in "Newbie Quests". Seems it should act just like the Gargoyle Mining Picks.

Otherwise I do not see why one should think their Ancient Tinker Hammer with charges should be used when using a Tinker Tools in their inventory, when they have been equipping their Jacobs Mining Pick with charges and using shovels in their inventory and not having charges used. Until they screw themselves out of said item by working off a flawed assumption.

All this experience, as much fault of it my own for expecting something different, has done is left me with the bad taste of OSI in my mouth. The sole reason why I quit the game so many years ago.

I will have to check this situation out myself, and possibly see if Kane has anything to add.

Thanks again for your time. I guess my point is, some items with charges do not behave the same when worn on paperdoll and items of same itemtype used from backpack.
Example: Ancient Fishing Pole on paperdoll, using a fishing pole from backpack.

Jacob's Pickaxe - New Haven Mining Quest
Hammer of Hephaestus (? - I have not tested item) - New Haven Blacksmith Quest
Ancient Fishing Pole - The Old Fisherman Quest

Ones not following behavior of above: Does one need to use an item Bless Deed on these? I have not tested Hammer of Hephaestus (which is blessed)
Ancient Tinkers Hammers
Ancient Blacksmith Hammers(? - I have not tested item)

That is all, I just hope someone else finds this useful, since for me, who hasn't played in well over 15 years. Had no clue as to why charges worked on some items and not on others.
