Player killers and PVP

Here are a few insights and quotes from UO Game Designer Raph Koster:

Easily the most amusing – and horrifyingly frustrating – chapters of Koster’s Ultima Online reminiscing revolve around the game’s infamous early PvP mechanics. It’s clear the Origin team struggled with a naive sort of libertarian mindset when developing – or more accurately, not developing – the PvP at launch. As Koster’s now-ancient blog posts relate, the developers truly believed that their laissez faire “let the community police itself” philosophy was the best approach. You don’t even need to read Koster’s account; you can hear it repeated in the plaintive appeals of FFA PvP players even here in 2018, as the wolves desperately try to convince the sheep to come play victim in the service of the simulation.

“We must have playerkillers in UO because the world would suffer if we did not have them,” he once wrote. “But they also must be channeled so that their effect is beneficial and not detrimental. […] We don’t want to exterminate them completely anymore than we want to make rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, and sharks extinct because they fill a valuable role in the virtual ecology.”

Of course, we all know the story of how the rattlesnakes, black widow spiders, and sharks played out in practice: Rampant ganking and griefing and PKing drove players out of the 1997 sandbox by the thousands – “a truly distressing number of our new player acquisitions,” Koster laments – until the developers engineered countermeasures

...many of the countermeasures failed miserably...

They tried flagging. They tried a notoriety system. They tried reputation. They tried bounties. They tried a faction system. They tried guild wars. They tried newbie protection mechanics. But for every attempt to curb the PKs the devs put in, the reds invented some fresh hell for their victims, exploiting every ruleset change. It’s hard not to chuckle as Koster rattles off each new idea and how the players thwarted it.

...and that’s a theme Koster riffs on over and over – that “no matter what you do, players will decode every formula, statistic, and algorithm in your world via experimentation.” In fact, he argues, you don’t even need combat in your game for griefplay to be present.

...players wasted no time in telling me bluntly that I had been drastically and painfully wrong. In the name of player freedoms, I had put them through the slow-drip torture of two years of experiments with slowly tightening behavior rules, trying to save the emergence while tamping down the bad behavior. The cost was the loss of many hundreds of thousands of players. "Ultima Online had churned through more than twice as many players who quit than EverQuest even got as subscribers that year.”

The griefer environment may not have been realistic, but it did create “endless stories and excitement, the stories that people tell and retell to this day,” as players were forced to work together to overcome the true evil in the game: the PK players themselves.

“I like safe and wild zoning now. I really, really didn’t,” he pens. “I used to think that you could reform bad apples, and argue with hard cases. I’m more cynical these days. […] I used to think that people were willing to act communally for the good of the community. Now I know more about the Tragedy of the Commons and the Prisoner’s Dilemma and think that people are mostly selfish. This isn’t Ivory Tower theory gone looking for empirical evidence. It’s experience gone looking for explanation.”

Shard Updates / Shard Update June 15, 2018

I know it has been a few weeks since the last update and for that I do apologize, between buying a new house then moving and some of these larger systems being put into place... just needed some time to get things done.  Know that even without an update we are still working on new content.
That being said we have a new staff member Grim, while he does the normal staff stuff we all do his focus is PvP (Which is something we have been looking for since day 1).  We have an idea of how we are going to recode Factions, the last few weeks while moving I have been designing it out and the coding of it will start Monday after the auction.  I am really happy with what we have been able to come up with and look forward to putting it into the game.

Base Spell Updated: Recoded the logic of how spell damage exceptions are handled (Maybe I will like this version)
Level Manager Updated:  Incorrectly handled math.
Domino's Deco Deeds Added: 6 new items
Glimmering Blue Kyanite Added: Armor and Jewerly: +5 Magery
Crimson Harpy Feather Added: +5 Debuff to any Inscription Bonus for spells cast against you. 1 Socket, can only be applied to Blood Jewelry Items and can be stacked.
Daily Event System Updated:  Handles Marketplace Jackpot winner selection and awarding prizes
Marketplace Updated:  The code is done, now we just need to take a second and go over the data again. (We do have a ton of custom items on the shard and they will all be available in the market place)
Blood Earrings Added:  Many of the same Mark of Travesty skill combination available, plus a few additions ones that fit our shard.  (I will let you find the cap)

Greetings Citizens of UO Evolution!

Lord British is calling all brave warriors to return to the kingdom!

***UO Evolution Reunion***

We sent out an email to all of our old players from the past 8 years and invited
everyone to return for the grand auction and Father's Day events. 

If you want to return to the shard this weekend, we are setting up new accts and
giving max stats for new/returning players to skip the grind and preview the shard.

I ask the community to welcome all of the new players as well as the returning
players.  Make sure we help them all get started again with some gear and
friendship!

UO Evolution has been growing again and I would like to keep the momentum going.  We hit 978+ players online last month, which very few freeshards have ever achieved. 

Our next goal would be to break 1000 players online!  We will need a community
effort to attract new players and to continue growing our playerbase.  Please log
in often and keep voting daily, to keep us #1 on all the top shard lists!

***House Drops/IDOC Events***

We are going to do house drops in July.  This is a great time to get a bunch of old
rares and gear.  It's also going to free up a ton of prime housing locations, so get ready for the land rush!

Even if you are not participating in the events, make sure you log in and refresh
your accounts.  Inactive accounts with no log ins for over 6 months are subject to deletion! LOG IN NOW!

Tales from Buccaneer's Den:

A young adventurer meets an old sea dog pirate for drinks at The Fallen Virgin. The adventurer sees that the pirate has a peg leg, a hook, and an eye patch. The adventurer asks, "So, old tar, how did you end up with the peg leg?"

The pirate replies, "Arrr, matey, we was in a squall at sea, and I was swept overboard into a school of sharks. Just as me mates were pulling me out, a shark bit me leg off."

"Wow!" said the adventurer. "What about your hook?"

"Well," replied the pirate, "We was boarding an enemy ship and we was battling the scurvy rats on board with swords. One of them, he cut me hand off."

"Incredible!" exclaimed the adventurer. "How did you get the eye patch?"

"A sea-gull dropping fell into me eye," replied the pirate.

"Ummm... You lost your eye to a sea-gull dropping?" the adventurer asked incredulously.

"Nay." said the pirate. "It was the first day with me hook!"

Date/Time of Event: Sat June 16th @ 6pm Server Time. 
Place: Global Moongate > Quest, Events & Games > Pet Wars
 
 
A 1st and 2nd Place Prize, along with participation prizes
for all entries will be up for grabs.
 
Things to remember while training your beasts:
-Put a Pet Wars tag on your pet before you train it. (Purchased at Brit Banks' Animal Trainer)
-Pet Must be Generation 1
-No Pet Powerscrolls
-No Pet Tonics
-No Bio-pet/Donation pet look-a-likes will be accepted as valid entries.
-Pets max level is 30
 
A couple rules to keep things running as smooth as possible:
-No PK during events. (Players or Pets)
-No Healing of any form on battling pets.
-Do not cast any spells to boost pet stats.
 
Day of the Event:
-When its your turn:
--Place pet inside the arena & use the "All Stay" command.
--Walk onto teleporter pad and place yourself inside of the cage.
--When both entries are in place, use command "All Kill" to begin the fight.
-When its Not your turn:
--Please take a seat in the participants seating area.
--Please ask any questions before the event starts as I do go over some rules before the start
-- Please pay attention to the event organizers
--When you win your match please sit in the benches on the south side of the pit inside of the fence
--If you lose your match please see the organizers for you prize bag, after receiving the bag please walk out of the gates and sit in the bleachers if you wish to stay and watch.
 
 
All other players who would like to attend without participating are more than
welcome to.  Seats are provided in a seperate section for these guests.
 
Have a blast training and I hope to see you all there!
